Fighting back tears, Smith remembers the time Fisher told him, “Don’t waste my time or yours worrying about what everyone says. You know who you are,” essentially giving Smith what he calls the “greatest gift [he] ever could have gotten from his childhood love: adulthood.”

Simon DelMonte • a year ago Well, it took a while for me to be hooked, but by the end I was. A great show? Not, no yet. The Canon City sequence is clearly vital to the plot, but was a detour nonetheless. But once we got back to SF and NYC for good, the show shifted gears a bit. Are the main characters a bit weak? Yes, especially Mystery Box Joe. But Frank is, I think, about the sort of person he ought to be: a hidden Jew whose lifelong paranoia and his efforts to get past that were bound to create someone who was never going to be entirely whole or entirely on an even keel. I don't like him but I think that is the point. It's fascinating how the bad guys are the most interesting people here (aside from Joe). John Smith is undoubtedly evil, but I wasn't rooting for him to die. The Chief Inspector is not much better. Even Wegener, his end of life regrets notwithstanding, isn't someone I wanted to see escape justice. And yet, these characters really grip me. And then there is the Trade Minister, who is possibly the most decent man in the bunch. From what I recall of the book, he was like that there as well. And his jump to another, more familiar world is earned in some weird way. So in short, I will be back. I don't know how long Spotnitz and friends can stretch out the mysteries of the film and their creator, or alternate realities. Or how long the soap operatics of the Smith family will be entertaining instead of cloying. But as hideous a world as they've created is - and it does still give me literal bad dreams, since isn't a world run by Nazis among a Jew's worst nightmares - it's also a great job of world-building. Even if that world has a few dull characters in it.
